Valentine's Day 2010 - 1 heart, 1 skull

The image immediately above (snapped by one Bro Lawrence Lew) is of St. Valentine's bedecked skull, which you can still "viddy" in Rome, Italy, in the church of St. Maria in Cosmedin. The real deal is about as romantic as a love song by Brooklyn's Notorious B.I.G., but after all, Valentine met with martyrdom in Rome during the year 269 AD, after being arrested for marrying Christian couples.

For the more romantic souls, is Jim Dine's iconic gestural woodcut on this hugely commercialized holiday. Interestingly, the 1st representation of the saint was in yet another woodcut, found in the Nuremburg Chronicle, way back in 1493.

Further Graduate Student Updatings

Camilla Taylor was awarded the Southern Graphics Council Graduate Student Fellowhip. The award includes a solo show at the 2011 SGC in St. Louis, MO, $1,000 towards creating a body of work for the show, and giving a presentation at this year's SGC in Philadelphia banquet dinner. Yay!

Graduate Student Updates - Tyler & Ya'el

I am quite pleased to announce that Tyler Ferreira is the 2010 winner of the Frogman's Graduate Student Scholarship at the University of South Dakota in beautiful Vermillion. In addition to receiving free tuition at a workshop, Tyler will also have a solo exhibition of his prints on display at the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts on the campus of the University of South Dakota. A bit of alright!

Ya'el Pedroza (seen pre-Hazel in this photo with Tyler) is part of a group exhibition called: "The OsCene 2010 - Contemporary Art & Culture in OC" at the Laguna Museum of Art. The 2/20 opening features DJ Velvet Touch (I'm so un-hip...I've never heard of him or her) & tickets are $20.00 pre-sale/$25.00 @ the door.

2/21 features a curatorial walk-through, which I think may be free?

Call 949/494-8971 to find out for certain. The address is: 307 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach, & the web-site of the Museum is: www.LagunaArtMuseum.org

Thanks and have a terrific week!
